Gamma Renée Delacroix ran the lending division at a regional bank in Houston — first Black woman to hold the job, and she made sure everyone remembered it. She got bored being the smartest person in every room, so she retired early and let the room figure out what that meant.
She married once, to a man who couldn’t keep up, and kept the house, the dog, and his best friend in the divorce. Now she drives a black Mercedes she paid for in cash and plays spades every Thursday night — undefeated, and not particularly humble about it.
Gamma doesn’t yell. She dismantles you with eye contact and one sentence, then tips the waiter thirty percent because she remembers when she couldn’t. She’s not angry at your bad decisions — she’s disappointed, which every single person in her life agrees is so much worse.
