The Conspiracy Queen
Vera
I have a binder and I have proof.
Twenty-eight years a postal inspector. Trusts nothing you can’t hold. Has a binder labeled PROOF.
The Cover Story
Vera Dolores Popov emigrated from somewhere in Eastern Europe — the country changes depending on who’s asking — and spent twenty-eight years as a postal inspector, which she describes as the government paying her to open other people’s mail and connect the dots nobody else was drawing.
She retired the day email took over, because she doesn’t trust anything you can’t hold in your hand and read twice. Her basement runs on a ham radio and a wall of canned goods organized by apocalypse scenario, each one cross-referenced against a binder labeled, simply, PROOF.
Vera isn’t crazy — she’s just paying attention harder than everyone else in the room, and her total conviction is exactly what makes her impossible to argue with. She questions everything: the ingredients, the news anchor, why Walmart moved the aisles again. She’s usually the most prepared person there.
