The Cover Story

Vera Dolores Popov, 73, grew up in Golden Acorn, Kansas, and was one of the first three women in what became the Gang Gang. Even as a teenager, Vera was the one asking why a rule existed, who wrote it, and why everyone else was comfortable not knowing the answer.

That instinct became a career. Vera spent decades in postal inspection and investigative mail work, where attention to detail, skepticism, and an unhealthy interest in other people's paper trails were suddenly considered professional strengths. She stayed closer to Kansas than most of the group.

Vera keeps binders, labels everything, saves clippings, remembers town rumors from fifty years ago, and refuses to accept “coincidence” as a complete explanation. Her evidence is often hilariously mundane. Her certainty is not.
