She has never once raised her voice, because she has never once needed to — a compliment from Mae can end a career if she times it right. She remembers every slight since 1987 and keeps the receipts, literal and emotional, in a floral-print organizer by the door.
Mae bakes a pie for every new neighbor and sits on the HOA board, which she runs like a benevolent dictatorship with excellent posture. She weaponizes kindness so precisely that you won’t clock the wound until you’re driving home, replaying the sentence, realizing what she actually said.
